AMERICAN ASTRONAUT MARSHA

She has seen sunrise and sunset 16 times a day. When she is at work, she looks down at the Earth.

On Friday, former American astronaut Marsha Ivins guided the audience through her spatial experience, using videos taken through her journeys. Ms. Ivins was in the city to inaugurate the Kerala chapter of the South India American Studies Network (SIASN). The interactive session was organised by the SIASN and the Kerala International Centre (KIC).

The videos showed astronauts floating around and playing with water drops. They exercised, played games, and took photographs of the Earth. Life, one would think, was so cool in space. Ms. Ivins agreed, saying those who stayed in space never wanted to come back.

With their lifestyle, the astronauts also had a few lessons to teach in waste management and power consumption, she said.

“We do not throw waste into space; we process it or take it back home.” She explained what she meant by processing. “Liquid waste is processed to be used for coffee the next day. In my experience, none of the astronauts have had any complaints so far.”

Space debris, such as abandoned spacecrafts or defunct satellites, is also treated and programmes are initiated to remove such debris.

But what about the risk of the spacecraft colliding with such debris? Ms. Ivins said the spacecraft could be carefully navigated or controlled to avoid such collisions.

Ms. Ivins, who had her heart set on becoming an astronaut at the age of 10, said the world had to move forward in the area of space exploration.

“Beyond the Earth, moon and Mars, we need to explore the solar systems, the millions of galaxies that surround us. When we become capable of building fuel, oxygen, and repairing damages to the space shuttle while in space, only then can we move further. The future is yours,” Ms. Ivins, who was head of the exploration branch of the astronaut office of NASA, said.

“All the astronauts who have travelled to space have one thing to say. As we go round the Earth, there are no natural borders, only man-made ones,” Ms. Ivins said.

          Google's latest doodle, a giant zipper running down the centre of the search engine's homepage, marks the birthday of Gideon Sundback, the Swedish-American electrical engineer most commonly associated with the development of the fastening device that revolutionised the clothing industry.

Before Sundback's intervention, the idea for a fastener based on interlocking teeth had circulated among engineers for more than 20 years but no one had perfected it.

His innovation was to place a dimple on the underside of each tooth and a nib on the top that would sit securely within the dimple of the tooth above it.

As a result, the join between two rows of teeth was then strong because no single tooth has enough room to move up or down and come apart. He also created the manufacturing machine for the new zipper.

Born on April 24, 1880, in Småland, Sweden, he moved to Germany following his studies and emigrated in 1905 to the US, where he started to work at Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

A year later, he was hired to work for the Universal Fastener Company in Hoboken, New Jersey, and became its head designer in 1909.

Sundback initially proposed the new zipper as a replacement for hook-and-eye fasteners on women's boots but it had become a regular feature for the flies of trousers and on dresses by the 1930s.

Sundback died of a heart condition in 1954 and was interred at Greendale cemetery in Meadville, Pennsylvania.

AGNI V launch today

DRDO Agni 5:

The Indian strategic establishment had been eagerly awaiting the flight test of the indigenously built 5000km-range missile as its success would catapult India to an exclusive club of countries like USA, Russia, China and France who possess technology to develop ICBM.

India on Thursday test fired Agni-5, the country's first long range inter-continental ballistic missile (ICBM) from Wheeler Island, off the Odisha coast.

The maiden flight test of Agni-5, was postponed on Wednesday. Bad weather conditions were cited as the reason. "Due to whether conditions".

India poses no missile threat: NATO heavy lightning in the region, the Agni-5 launch is postponed for safety reasons," Ravi Kumar Gupta, director, directorate of public interface, Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) had said.

Agni-5 is a three-stage, all solid fuel powered missile with multiple independent targetable re-entry vehicle (MIRV) which means the missile can target several areas simultaneously with one-tonne nuclear warhead.

The missile, with a length of 17.5metre, weighs 50 tonnes and can carry 11 quintals of warheads.

The Dutch firm, Burg, manufactures innovative wrist watch mobile phone across the globe. The firm launched its five models Burg 9, Burg 10, Burg 11, Burg 12 and Burg 13 in Delhi and Gurgaon outlets.

The price of the launched products ranges between Rs 9,000 to Rs 24, 000.

The global sales director of the firm revealed that the device is equipped with all features of mobile phones and wrist watches.

Struggling cellphone maker Nokia on Wednesday disclosed a software bug in its new flagship Lumia 900 model, dealing a setback to its ambitions to re-enter the US smartphone market. 

Nokia lost smartphone market dominance to Apple and Google in part due to its weak performance in the United States and the Lumia 900, which uses Microsoft's Windows Phone software, is a key component in its comeback bid. 

"It's like they stalled their engine when everybody is looking at them at the start of their race," said Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi. 

The model went on sale in the United States through AT&T on April 8 and is due to launch globally this quarter. "A memory management issue was discovered that could, in some cases, lead to loss of data connectivity," Nokia smartphone unit chief Jo Harlow and Nokia US chief Chris Weber said in a joint statement. 

"This issue is purely in the phone software, and is not related to either phone hardware or the network itself," they said. A solution would be available around April 16. 

Nokia said it will offer anyone who has bought Lumia 900, or will buy by April 21, a $100 credit to their AT&T bill. The operator sells the phone for $99.99 with a two year contract. 

"They really did not need it particularly in this market, but I like the way they are dealing with it," Gartner's Milanesi said.

           The above line is true from Recent images shown by  European Space Agency’s Mars Express spacecraft reveal a series of ‘pit-chains’ on the flanks of one of the largest volcanoes in the Solar System.

            Depending on their origin, they might be tempting targets in the search for microbial life on the Red Planet.The images, taken on 22 June 2011, cover Tractus Catena in the Arcadia quadrangle, part of the vast Tharsis region on Mars.

This region boasts a number of huge volcanoes, including the three collectively known as Tharsis Montes. To their north sits Alba Mons, also known as Alba Patera, one of the largest volcanoes in the Solar System by area and volume.

Tractus Catena sits on its southeastern flank of Alba Mons and the pit-chains in that region are a series of circular depressions that formed along fracture points in the martian crust.

GOOGLE GLASSES

       Google improvised its products.  for letting people look at life through internet-tinted glasses. 

A video posted at a Project Glass page at Google+ social network confirmed the rumor that the technology titan is working on eyewear that meshes the online world with the real world. 

"We think technology should work for you -- be there when you need it and get out of your way when you don't," members of the project team said in a Google+ post. 

"A group of us from Google X (Labs) started Project Glass to build this kind of technology; one that helps you explore and share your world."

Images showed people wearing eyeglasses with stylish silver frames that featured tiny cameras and on-lens displays to discretely show information such as walking directions, weather forecasts or messages from friends. 

Built-in microphones let wearers command the internet-linked glasses by speaking. 

"We took a few design photos to show what this technology could look like and created a video to demonstrate what it might enable you to do," Google said, stressing that the glasses were a concept far from being brought to market. 

"We're sharing this information now because we want to start a conversation and learn from your valuable input."

The project team invited people to express ideas for the glasses at the Google+ page. 

Google co-founder Sergey Brin is deeply involved with the California company's X Labs, best known for its work on a self-driving car.

Indian space research is ready to launch another satellite.

            The Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) will launch a French advanced remote sensing satellite in a few months. Sources said Isro's commercial arm, Antrix Corporation, signed a Rs 100 crore deal to launch the 800kg satellite, SPOT 6, built by Astrium SAS, a subsidiary of France's EADS.

              It will be launched by Isro's polar satellite launch vehicle (PSLV). "A commercial launch services agreement between Antrix and EADS was signed recently," said an Isro release.

Earth Hour In India

In the past we have seen about world Earth hour now in our Nation.

            With several houses and commercial establishments switching off lights and electrical appliances for an hour, Bangalore joined hundreds of cities across the world on Saturday in observing Earth Hour.

            Earth Hour, observed between 8.30 p.m. and 9.30 p.m., was in support of the global initiative by World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to raise awareness about climate change and its effects.
